Possum Fur

This stunning garment has been lovingly crafted from possum fur by Master Furrier Graeme Maxwell.

In an environment where using exotic fur is no longer environmentally acceptable, New Zealand is unique in having a supply of high quality fur available through the need to control an introduced pest.

Since its introduction to New Zealand in 1858 the brushtail possum has multiplied prolifically and now causes widespread damage to New Zealands native forests and wildlife.Possums eat or destroy both eggs and chicks of native birds many of which are endangered . In an effort to control the possum population, which is believed to be around 70 million,there are programmes inplace to capture them and rather than waste a quality fur, it is tanned and dyed and becomes a high quality and desirable product .
